Curator — Volume Two, Drop 4
Contributed “Spiralic”, then introduced Cole Pulice and Marielle V. Jakobsons.
“Spiralic”
Chuck Johnson: Octatrack, edits
““Spiralic” is the latest in a series of works I've been calling “Caoineadh.” This series of performances, recordings, and live mixes seeks new pathways into composition and improvisation, and draws from DJ techniques, wordless voices, voiceless laments, and pulses suggested by negative spaces.”
Chuck Johnson is a California-based composer, producer, and musician who approaches his work with an ear towards the faults and instabilities that reveal latent beauty. His recordings have been published by Western Vinyl, Thrill Jockey, Ghostly, and Three Lobed, among others.
Every curator brings two more voices into the volume. These are theirs.
“A New Age”
Cole Pulice: tenor saxophone with live signal processing
“Something like a work of contemplative post-minimalism performed and recorded live in a single take. “A New Age” follows a recursive melody line that contemplatively spirals into a shimmering portal of distortion.”
Cole Pulice (they/them) is an electroacoustic saxophonist, improviser, and composer based in Oakland, California. Anchored by the sound of their live signal-processed saxophone, Cole's work has been released on Leaving Records, Orange Milk, and Moon Glyph.
“A Direction Without End”
Marielle V. Jakobsons: Fender Rhodes, violin, Moog Matriarch & electronics
““A Direction Without End” drifts through suspended violin lines, Rhodes clusters, and distant synth light, tracing a path that never resolves. It inhabits a continuous sense of motion — where time circles and arrival never comes.”
Marielle V Jakobsons creates immersive compositions for synthesizers and expressive strings, focused on minimal structures and the shaping of sound as a physical, spatial experience. Her latest album, The Patterns Lost to Air, has been called “formally rich and deeply expressive.”
